Domestic sales increased to the highest point since March 2008 as sales jumped from 10.25 mln SAAR in December to 10.73 mln SAAR in January.
Domestic car sales rose from 4.20 mln SAAR in December to 5.00 mln SAAR in January while domestic truck sales fell from 6.04 mln SAAR to 5.73 mln SAAR during the same time frame.
Total imports increased from 3.31 mln SAAR in December to 3.45 mln SAAR in January.
Year-over-year, sales increased a healthy 11% in January.
Chrysler Group, with a 44% y/y increase in January, was the big winner. It was followed closely by Volkswagen, which enjoyed a 40% increase in sales. Hyundai-Kia reported a 20% increase in sales.
Ford (F, +9%), General Motors (GM, -6%), Toyota (TM, +8%) and Honda (HMC, +9%) all lost market share in January.
